There is likely to be enough opinions floating around that will make it very hard for anyone in the domain name business to be unaware of what is going on.

The real question is whether other registrars will be concerned, or in fact look at ways to either license or replicate the same sort of technology??

In many ways, IF and it's a hypothetical "IF" registrars really wanted to do the right thing by customers, why not offer this as a "free" service for them for the 4 day period......... (domain tasting for everyone, not just the professional big boys and gals).

Log into your account or register and "we will keep the domain name exclusively for you for 4 days - for free no less!!".............. Frankly, it is one of the few ways I could see NetSol getting out of this with a ounce of credibility and support for the statement on "looking out for customers."

If that is not the case, then I see a huge opportunity for another major registrar to offer a similar service. To prevent continual tasting, just limit the grace period to only 4 days - no renewal - purchase or you loose the name.

In many ways, for people who hand register names and are not professional domainers, I could see this being a great service feature and customer draw card. The "I'm not sure if I really want it crowd" and the "got home from the pub and registered a ripper of a name - gotraveloutbackaustraliainanoldutewithablackdogandfishingrod.com"

If NetSol really wasn't trying to screw the public, wouldn't they have put a nice little pop-up disclaimer when a customer did a search??

T-O-T-A-L B-S.com I think I'll let them 'hold on' to that one for a 4 days.(in every TLD &ccTLD

actually, coding this can be done in under an hour - anyone has a big, big list of trademarks?

Let us say XYZ is a trademarked term. You can pick up any online dictionary and attach dictionary words with XYZ. So you have domains like XYZsmells.com, XYZany.com, XYZfinance.com, XYZshares.com, XYZtechnology.com and so on.

Now is the best time to shut down this Netsol "service".

This is another sign of the value of domains, first it starts with .com and one registrar, will it go to other extensions and other registrars?

Netsol says they aren't monetizing the domains, but wait til the uproar dies down, a month, three months, whatever, and the ppc ads will start appearing on the pages I bet. When they see the traffic they get ofcourse they'll want to make money from it.

The big thought last year was that registrars would start keeping dropped domains, and not release them back to the available pool. Now they are getting the domains before they're even regged!

I agree it's a crappy practice, but it does show that there is more awareness about domain values, and maybe will even drive more people to the aftermarket instead of putting up with shady fresh regging hasles - unless this practice by Netsol is stopped.

I think that leaves TuCows with the only WHOIS you can trust. How soon before they give in and start doing the same?

I never thought this would get to the point where you can't even search for domains anymore.

Hello, Do you represent NameJet?? :?:

In response to your post: It is my understanding that registrars have long been selling lists of searched domains. ie. This is nothing new.

BTW Tucows keep domains and send the rest to their own auctions platform right ?
And I hear Netsol does the same: cherrypicking of expiring domains and they leave the crumbs to hungry domainers. Am I right ?

Getting so many more enquiries, they probably figured that the landing pages needed some ads to capitalize on all the interest.
