I was recently asked about one of my numeric domains and what I had in mind for it.

The link at the bottom of the page provides some of the answers. I hope that this mobile approach to "surfing" becomes much more popular soon.

WordDial is a world leader in mobile access to the Internet. They take common terms such as "news", register the telephone pad numeric, .com equivalent, set up a portal and sell subscriptions.

I have been following them for a few years now and it looks like many of the early bugs have been worked out of the system. It will however take some time for widespread use and acceptance. It seems that their home country, New Zealand, is starting to catch on.

I have a few properties that may prove useful. Many will see the potential in some of these. I'm still a novice at this and would entertain chatting about potential partnership development.

2582633.com (Club Med)
32273.com (eCard)
346337.com (Finder) as in AdultFriend, Grad, JewishFriend etc.
3776.com (Esso)
62824.com (Match)
66639.com (Money)
7223.com (Race)
732763.com (PeaPod)
764377.com (Rogers) <-- Canuck Telco
7849827.com (Quixtar)

Even Elequa (FMA) and our own world famous "Duke" have seen the value here. Although there may be totally different reasons for registering the domains (and they are not even the .com's)

FMA has 3229.net and 3229.org (eBay). Also 477.org (GPS)

Duke has 635.us (NFL), and like I said, there may be other applications and reasons for registering.

But then again, I may be way out in 5338 field.

Was the one you were asked about 66639 perhaps?

I have owned a number of numeric domains based on the telephone keypad and words for some yrs., reg'ing them as far back as 1999 from what I recall.

However, the technology being worked on by WorldDial in NZ is very slow at catching on and not sure if it will ever become widely used, the jury is still out on that.

By an odd coincidence your best number name appears to be 66639.com (Money) but I would not want it due to 666 being the Mark of The Beast

Yes it was.

I'm not supersticious so I'll hang onto it for now.

Isn't WorldDial opposed to the use of domains which represent a trademarked entity?

Not that I am aware of. Have you seen something in their policies or "fine print" that says so?

At present, they may be averse to ACTIVELY PROMOTING numeric equivalents of trademarks. But their registration activity tells a very different story. Among hundreds of other trademark equivalents, WordDial owns:

627227.com Nascar (One I let slip through the cracks)
2653.com Coke
73277.com Sears
73774.com Pepsi
623662537.com McDonalds
782728257.com Starbucks

My sense is that they are stockpiling many hundreds more trademarked numeric equivalents. Nothing illegal about registering domains for a future profit. They are waiting for the generics to increase in acceptance and popularity. Then when these corporations come to realize that "Hey, we can get people to access us by mobile phone", WordDial will be happy to offer up their services.... for a profit.

Some corporations, Nike included, have seen the future and have registered their numeric equivalent.

Is there an element of cybersquatting here? Not in my books. As far as I know, a string of numbers that each represent 3 or 4 letters, are not trademarkable. I'm no lawyer so if one wants to wade in here, that would be great.

Therefore, if anyone is interested in chatting, my door is open.

Two things made me think that they might - one their "trademark policy" which is "you may only use trademarks if you are the legal owner of the trademark" although I can see how this may only apply to the written content of the web pages and not any numerical equivalent of trademarked letter combinations in the URL, particularly if they're registering them themselves.

The other is that all the "portals" they list on their site are generics. The problem is that as soon as a number combination is advertised as having a similarity to a trademarked name and/or a third party makes a profit out of selling advertising on a webpage visited by people looking for a trademarked name, it seems that corporations are ready to claim "bad faith" and call for the lawyers, just like they went after typosquatters despite having little real claim to the typo. Not that I'm claiming to be any expert.

Cheers,

Not surprised my guess was correct. It' a great one and far better than my numeric names, and one you should definately hang on to.

If the technology gets going it could easily be worth lots of MONEY

P.S. Do you mind sharing how you made that cool animated Avatar?

I let some good ones go that I'm kicking myself for (wine, nascar, escorts)

Here's hoping for a lot more activity.

Good stuff Spec.

Of course the 3 digit coms are gonna be much more expensive, but the .US are more rare as Neustar has reserved so many. Me thinks their running of the US phone numbers (as well as the .us registry) might prove interesting.

Just for fun, I have:
237.us -- ADS
286.us -- ATM
322.us -- FCC
349.us -- FIX
422.us -- GAB
489.us -- GUY
529.us -- LAX
639.us -- NEW
749.us -- SIX
946.us -- WIN

Any idea which ones have been reserved and which ones they intend to reserve should they drop? Thanks :)

I also just picked up 2833437.com (buddies.com), though worddial has 283379.com (buddy.com).

If it does get popular I'll atleast have one good numeric :)

Is there any program for converting a list of numbers to their letter equivalents and then outputting those that are in the (a) dictionary.

Or could anyone do this for me for some dnf? (or cash) I have about 300 4 digit domains.

Presumably each four digit domain would have around 3x3x3x3 = 81 different letter combinations?
