Tonight, I became a certified and registered therapy dog handler. It pretty cool and quite different for me. I used to train and work dogs for the military in sentry, drug, and bomb duties.
I had gone through the course with one of our 5 rescued labs, Lexi. I passed the course last week but tonight was testing night by sanctioned TDI (Therapy Dogs International) evaluators.
Other than the fact that I took a nasty fall over a parking barrier when I got there, Lexi performed excellent. Plus, she also got certified with my wife.
Lexi is our third TDI therapy dog. The other two are Simon and Cotton. Only handlers checked off with the particular dog are authorized to work in a TDI sanctioned event.
Next week, my wife and I will both be starting additional training with two more of our rescued labs, Mobi and Abby.
At any rate, I have to say I am quite happy and proud of myself. We may be attending to kids at the Children's hospital but we'll wait and see what comes up.
