Who is buying these names at those prices? I think Only.me is the best one, a bit of fun for an email address, sorry I don't see any long term value in the others.

I'm not sure who is buying them, but some people are willing to fork over the cash even if it's just for speculative purposes (it seems).

Also, the verb-oriented domains that make a phrase with "me" look to be the hottest ones right now.

Why? I believe that domains like "only.me" make a catchy phrase that people can remember. It reads as "only me".

Yes, that's right.
Why?

.me theoretically allows for an exponentially higher degree of consumer personalization.

Why would an individual be concerned with insuring "us" when he can insure "me" (him/herself) instead?

aweso.me - $24,189

Why? Isn't that just a bit nuts? Since when do you spell awesome with a dot in the middle? That name will never get any traffic, not in a million years....just seems like an terrible waste of money.

Most of them are severely overpriced imho. Most of these will lose 90% or more of their value in 2-3 years.

yet...

It'll be interesting to find out what names actually sell.

The fact that 3 obvious trademark names were all sold for $XX,XXX and $X,XXX to the same person makes me very suspicious about these .me auctions. Toyota, Mitsubishi and Skoda have no reason to bid such high amounts for these names. I'm pretty sure they could easily get them for $1,500 each by WIPO.

Some sales might be genuine. InsureMe.com could be bidding against one of it's competitors for Insure.me, Recruit.me is brandable for an end user in the recruitment game, etc...

Well sure, but doesn't it make you wonder who he was bidding against?
How many other parties gave up because this guy just kept bidding?

Yes, it definitely makes me wonder. Probably not the brightest bulbs in the box.

I preregistered "inco.me" and can now bid on it, but it is over $3800 already and still going up..... It takes the fun out of it... I had tried contacting Montenegro last year about it. I did whatever I could to try to snag it before everyone knew about .me.

Anyone heard of these license plate auctions in dubai? People spend millions to obtain a single digit or otherwise fashionable license plate number (to put on their Bentleys of course...) Same thing..

At least the high prices take any jealousy out of someone else having it. :)

don't see the potential of any name to go beyond a few hundred bucks

I hope you are not comparing a top keyword in a top extension with domain hacks in an exotic extension :)
Besides, the sale of business.com is not just the domain but a business.
Domain hacks are worthless, and the TM .me domains like toyota are useless and a huge waste of money.
As usual there are exceptions but as a rule you won't strike it rich with the exotic extensions.

No, not at all. I was just saying that some domains do in fact have the potential to be worth more than a few hundred dollars. :)

I believe the currrent .me auction that is being done by the .me registry is limited to those domains that had multiple-PreRegistrations, and the only bidders are those who pre-registered. so its people with strong interests, and perhaps TM holders.

I would be interested if there was a place for .me registrations in general. something focused on just .ME. Might be nice for each of the minor TLD's.
