Don't take the plunge until you can make a living from domaining and you build a steady revenue flow. Don't rely on PPC alone, develop. Broker domains. Diversify.
If you consistently make more from domains than your full-time job, then you're ready to jump.

I would like to add something to this convo.

The only reason you should ever quit your job is if you're making more money on the side from domaining.

I assume you have a full time job (40 hours)

If you are a domainer then you probably put in 40 hours on the side for domaning and development in your spare time as well....even if it's 20 hours...work your % out..

Are you making more money from domaining? If not, then it's probably not wise to quit.

I would rather be paid less for doing something I love

the exceptions are:

a.) you have a family to support
b.) you need to maintain a standard of living (ie. not starve or be out on the street)
c.) your job pays a gross amount of money, in which case you do it until you've got enough saved up to leave

ok it seems to me like you're just trying to bash me for one of my domains.like i said i have some crappy names and i also have some good ones that i believe are valuable in the future.i never said i learned enough i said i know enough to quit my job and make this business work for myself.doesn't mean i'm going to stop learning about domains.how many domains you own? probably 1,000? how many of them are actually winners?i own 53 domains. i hand regge'd about 10 domains on pure speculation and the others i picked up on the drop and i know that at least 15 of my domains can hold tremendous value.i haven't paid more than $20 for a domain as of yet. i believe this game you CAN turn something like dyckmanapartments.com into value.there is alot of real estate development in dyckman street and that's what prompt me to register this name.with development, proper marketing and promotions, and the right people to contact i know i will make it work for me. but like i said your honest opinion is welcome and it's great motivation to become a better if not the best domainer.i came a long way from hustling on a corner making more money than you ever have domaining,to working an honest 9-5 job with no money in my pocket and now going to college and soon to be making this business work for me.

thank you james

Ok. It is good that you have quality domain names. It is true that I got around 1000 domains.

Visit my homepage to see some of them. Click on my name and visit homepage.

Good luck with whatever your decision.

LOL
Don't listen :)
Find a road and run...this is your life so before quitting job think about your future and make a plan.
I repeat is possible make a living with domains...but forget this is an easy job because this is not like win a ticket lottery.
With my "old" work I worked 8 hours a day, with this online business I work 10/15 hours every day (but I'm happy now :))

Domains are like girls and we are the pimps lol

The important question that many people have asked: How do I make money in the domain business. If you can answer the question then you will be ok.

A business plan is needed for any business: big or small.
Step by step how to archieve the goal from A to B. No one can or should tell you it is ok to quit the full time job and going full time in the domain business. If you have good track records in the past with a clear goal in mind then you should be able to make it.
There are several areas in the domain business that you can make money but you need to narrow down and focus on what you know and do best.

One important thing about being self-employed is you are very easy to be distracted and can't get anything done.

Good luck!
John

I get very bored with domaining, I still fantasize about my old job I used to love it, now I work one or 2 hrs a week and I get very but very very bored I miss some real excitement. I actually kind of hate domains. I would recommend to do not invest in domains at all unless you have a very large budget. If you are going for development its a total different matter. Choose very wisely a niche market and stick with it no matter what. If not you might be in trouble down the road. Good Luick

Cleverly,
Sometimes, words get in the way. I am sure James meant nothing but goodwill towards you. We all want everyone to succeed. You can see how folks congratulate a total stranger when he or she makes a featured sale on the charts. All is good. Find the right spot. Keep hammering at it.

I can see that you have already found your niche while considering developing dyckmanapartments.com - Now, as I see it, you will only do better going forward.

You will do well. I have 100% faith in you.

thanks for motivation.again i do welcome everyone's opinion that's why i posted this thread.in all honesty from domaining i'm still not making as much as my job,but i feel that the reason why is because i'm not working full time on it.most of my time is invested in work,my son,and my wife.then a few hours domaining, which includes doing research, learning more from domaining, parking, developing (still learning web designing as well) SEO etc. i think the only way to maximize my capacity as a domainer and profit more from it is from dedicating full time to it.i gotta give up one or the other to become successful in one or the other.and i choose domaining and web developing.
:cool::cool::cool:

p.s check out my first website i made about 1 week ago getlaidny.com

Just a curious question: what are you doing now?

i'm a rail car technician.we build, maintain, and warranty subway trains for nyct.

"Development" is not the answer to every bad domain registration. Research is the key. You must base your purchasing decisions on real data (i.e. monthly keywords searches, DNJournal sales, available extensions, google results, popular combinations, similar end-user domains, etc) or you are just throwing money away.

I have wasted hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars learning this principle. Now I think I finally understand what constitutes a good domain.

Before you decide to be a full time domainer, I suggest that you take a hard look at your domains and try to "firesale" the ones that do not have real data backing them up because they will just waste your time. Then, do some research, acquire some good names (even if you have to spend more than reg fees), and aggressively go after end users. After you make a couple of good end-user sales and can see a pattern emerging (or alternatively start making steady PPC money from development) THEN quit your day job.

Before you leap.
It is always a good idea to get your side job which in this case is domaining take care of your smallest bill first, then your smallest bill and the next bill, by the time you make enough to pay all your bills and then some, that is when you can actually rationally begin to think of quiting your day job. I also have a new daughter and I appluad your confidence.
No matter how bad the economy is, I take solace in the fact that over 90% of the employable are still employed so tha is not so bad.
