Decent GDP but pretty small country Canada no? I'd rather bet on China or India or Japan myself.

Interesting comment and yes Canada is small population wise, but has a dynamo of an economy - we are sitting on the largest reserves of oil and gas in the world, have the best consumer of it right on our border and Canada has lead the G8 nations in growth for the past decade.

Chinese and Indians as compared to Japanese or Canadians don't have the same disposable incomes as we do. Canada - a nation of only 33 million spent $8 billion online in 2005 - 2006 was up but final stats not released yet. Total consumer spending was $762 billion for the same year.

Canada also has a much higher education level, more stable, the baddest kid on the block is our best friend and neighbour and the percentage of the population using the net is much higher than China or India - even if the total numbers may be smaller.

China and India are great longer term investments imo.

My problem is I don't speak Chinese, Japanese, or any of the languages in India. From what I hear english is used in India but really only a very small minority. The future of China looks great, but right now I'm not sure how much buying/selling is going on there online. You have to deal with the markets you know.

I was going through my lists which I started making last summer - I've noticed a distinct theme - nearly all the ovt domains of 30,000 and higher are gone. You would be hard pressed to find any single word .ca's with ovt over 10,000 and the majority of these two groupings are being grabbed up by the same four people/companies. Most targeted seems to be anything to do with sex, finance, health and the Internet.

I'm personally going to buy up all those 30,000+ ovt domains that i know of in any niche that attracts good advertising money before they all disappear. And they are going fast. On Feb 19 2007 there were 799,233 registered .ca's. Today the number is 846,147. nearly 50,000 in only three months!

This may just be me, but I'll think twice about selling any traffic/rev and/or high ovt .ca's for the prices I have been. They are getting harder and harder to replace at a reasonable cost.

If you are finding good domains like hugegrowth did today, count yourself lucky. There are not many left to be had at regfee. My two cent observation.

Like Jacksplat, I too have kinda stopped focusing on the TBRs... Stopped using Pool months ago, and now just usually put in reg-free bids and just consider it a bonus if something slips through.

For sure, Whitebark, you should reg those 30,000+ ovt names you've found.
These days, I consider myself somewhat lucky finding even two-word phrases in the 10,000 range.

Well you guys got a free run today from us. Sibername or Shaw ( I don't know which) dropped off the map 10 seconds before the end of bidding and we lost out on every bid:upset::upset::upset::upset:

And pool got me 1 out of 10 submitted.

Not my best day grrrrrr.

Yes, I saw Sibername picking up slr.ca and also the HYBRIDAUTO/S combo.

I hope what you got was not chicagodeepdishpizza2for1.ca going by your remark.. although I thought 2for1pizza.ca was a better choice!!!!

I managed to get one, but it must be a piece of crap cuz for the life of me I cant remember it and its only been a day.

I looked into next weeks list and wasnt impressed again. I'm spending more time looking into .com drops now and picking up some real winners for low investment. I find by not being too picky and bidding on 100 times what I need at unreal low bids I get the ocassional few at rock bottom prices. And when I come across one I have to have my funds are in good enough shape to outbid even the deep pocket bidders. There are some known overspenders on snapnames and I've outbid them a few times. but the names just rock, cant resist.

I shouldnt be known for anything much in tbr or drops really. In .ca tbr I havent been active in months outside of lazy bidding (also use several idents, only a few people here know some of them). And even being online has been minimal. My snapnames presence has been very slight as well. I bid low and if i get a name I'm just lucky. And unless people check whois after an auction they shouldnt know I was the one banging up the bids.

Haven't they heard of IDN's?

Since their inception, domain names have been largely confined to ASCII text, based on a Roman character set used in the English language. While this works well for people familiar with those characters, thousands of other language characters – from French accents to the Greek alphabet to Japanese Kanji – are not represented.

If they make French .ca in IDN then I am backing up the truck. It could be a great landrush if you know what to look for. I wonder if they would give current holders of french .ca names a chance to secure their IDN counterpart?
