Not to knock the methodology but if I read this right you're making the decision as to which domains top the charts and I can tell you from experience that your picks aren't everybodies picks.

For instance desert.ca I wouldn't even waste the time on it.

I believe that the order of the domains is the order in which they were acquired, 1st, 2nd, 3rd.

COR, thanks for this project, it's quite interesting :)

You are both right I guess. The top domains doesn't always mean the most wanted.

Hi Dropwizard,

What we are tracking here is who takes one of the first three spots in any TBR session. What domains land at the top is irrelevant as this is very subjective. What is important to you may not be important to me and vice versa. Furthermore, different TBR providers may rank domains differently in their list based on how much they feel their return will be from a particular catch.

But while domains themselves are subjective and thus cannot be tracked, capture time is not. As we all know, a TBR session starts exactly at 2:00:00 pm. All TBR providers optimize their system so that they get as close to 2:00:00 as possible. Usually the competition is nail biting fierce.

Here are the timestamps of the first 5 positions from March 27:
Position 1 ----> 14:00:00.000229
Position 2 ----> 14:00:00.000792
Position 3 ----> 14:00:00.001995
Position 4 ----> 14:00:00.002078
Position 5 ----> 14:00:00.002879

Two domains were snapped within the first millisecond and all 5 were snapped within three milliseconds after 2 pm.

As you can see, competition is fierce, nail-biting fierce. One tenth of a millisecond makes all the difference in what could be a $x,xxx or $xx,xxx catch for that provider.

Each TBR provider is trying to beat the others by fine tuning their system so that they make it as close to 2 pm as possible. Who comes first reflects on who does a better job as a digital sniper if you like. By tallying the results week after week, a picture emerges of the best digital sniper, and the TBR provider with the most skilled programmers. And I must say that the stats we have been tracking week after week do extrapolate into the big TBR picture. I am sure if we make a survey about what one believes the best TBR drop catcher are, the results would mirror what stats in this forum are telling us. No one that is serious about a domain will take a risk of not backordering it first with MyID.ca, then with Sibername, then with Pool.

The TBR drop catchers aim to come first. Those who succeed over and over are undoubtedly the best at their craft.

Here's the tally as of today and out of 63 spots and 126 points:

Koallo: 1 spot (0 x rank 1, 0 x rank 2, 1 x rank 3) ---> 1 point

Here are the rankings as of May 22, 2013 (21 TBR sessions, 126 points total) :

So I guess it's important to get a server into the same datacenter, or as close as possible to the CIRA system. That and having your clock synced exact. Then again, I imagine that you can hammer all you want before the 2pm start but those requests don't count. But I guess you get some kind of success response, so after your request #1 succeeds, fails or is denied (too early?), you try again based on that response. If success, submit request/domain #2; if too early, try #1 again; if #1 taken, try #2, etc...

Seems like fun, but also a bit stressful :) Then again, you've got nothing to loose at reg fee :)
