I always assumed they were ghosts. It seemed too strange that the day the forum sells suddenly they all appeared. At the very least, you would have expected a fair number (10-20%?) who were just hanging out all that time to sign up as gold members, and there would have been a more noticible bump in contributors here.

What's a ghost and why would anyone want to have 200 ghosts online?

Both good questions and I am the wrong person to ask about both of them. I was just speculating on what they were, not how or why they were.

I am pretty sure it was redirected traffic. DCG pumped some traffic to the site and every unique visitor was considered a guest. Now it looks as if the redirection has stopped and with it go the guests.

Easiest, simplest explanation. Someone else had a thread about the methodology of boosting traffic. DCG was seeing if the site could handle that many guests, so I guess the test is done.

Hi,

First the guests are real.

Second guests do turn to members as is quite evident by the numbers.

Third, redirected traffic or any other kind of traffic is good for any website.

Fourth, expect more guests/ghosts/goblins/members.

Agree ... somewhat. If they're coming from something like Domains.com, that's a good thing! If they're coming from like RecyledPotatoChipsForCheap.com, than what's the point (other than to bulk up the "guest" numbers)?
Quality (targeted traffic) over quantity, I guess.
Thanks ... good thread.

215 guests on the board. :) Do you believe in magic -- popular song from the 70's.

I guess you guys have forgotten that DCG is a "traffic broker"; he actually sells traffic for a living, well ... kind of. ;)
