A more pressing problem with short acronyms, especially two letter and less, is they often lack any meaning to most people with some rare exceptions.

Have to agree. This seems to be a case where less isnt more. I've never once heard anyone ever say "hand me the yp" and I doubt I ever will.

I agree, but maybe that's because they didn't brand it that way before, maybe with this purchase they will start doing so and someone will ask for the why pee :cheesy:

I guess being yellow the colour of the brand, it even makes some sense

I don't think meaning is what companies who get 2-letter domains are after - I think it's more about clout/eliteness. Yellow Pages used to be the dominant force, but now with so much competition especially fierce competition from the likes of Yellow Book, they probably wanted to do something to regain some of the clout and dominant aura they once had.

I'm sure the business the domain had been doing probably helped a lot too - relevant traffic for them included in with maybe the only other domain they could ever possibly want for branding purposes. I'm sure that amount of money isn't that big for them.

it was mentioned on a dnjournal report but becuase it was an established website when sold it didnt quite count. although i would disagree as they didnt buy business, they ditched site etc

YP.com Sold for $3.85m

In a move aimed at making better use of resources, on November 5, 2008, LiveDeal sold the domain name yp.com to YellowPages.com LLC for cash totalling US$3,850,000.

LiveDeal’s primary source of ongoing revenues is the sale of Internet Advertising Packages, which targeted users of their yp.com property. LiveDeal hopes to be able to move those customers to another of their websites, livedeal.com, and is hopeful that any loss of customers resulting from their sale of yp.com will not significantly or adversely impact on their future revenues.

Obviously Yellow Pages, part of the AT&T conglomerate, is an ideal purchaser of the domain name and is currently using the domain name as a redirect to yellowpages.com.

Great deal, specially in a middle of a recession.

It's time to go after YP in all those weird languages people speak on the web: Greek, Russian, Chinese, Japanese...
Here's one:
