Industry-specific TLDs (.coop .museum .aero .travel .jobs) have all been failures.
They have failed to gain any traction from the industries they claim to serve.
All these TLDs were launched when many ccTLDs were small operations run out of university computer departments. The rise of ccTLDs made it more logical for potential registrants to use the ccTLD domain as their primary brand. The pervasiveness of .com meant that these registrants had to be .com or (unless .org) in the US market. The .me ccTLD has effectively nuked .name TLD. The localisation effect of ccTLDs on the web (as opposed to domain) business is something that none of these registries anticipated and the big danger with the new gTLDs is that many of the applicants are still applying the same logic to their applications.
