My domain cabinets.net sold in the low/no reserve auction on opening night. At first I was hesitant thinking that it wouldn't get proper exposure but in the end I was pleasantly surprised with a $20k sale - my reserve was $5k. Most of the low/no reserves got some action unlike most of the domains in the main auction. Would it be fair to say that low reserves = more bids = higher sales prices?

We saw that wih the recent Sedo auction. Domains could have gone over the reserve but got not bids due to the insanely high reserve.

Domains with s $1 reserve still sold in the XX,XXX to X,XXX,XXX range.

OK, so the auctioneer got himself a little tied in knots a couple of times, but you try standing up there and keeping your concentration for as long as they do and see how you manage....lol.

Doesn't take much to fool you, does it.

Bidding off the wall is legitimate but controversial. I'm against it but I accept that it is part and parcel of many live auctions.

Good to hear man, you seem to be learning this business fast. Excuse my ignorance but how much does it cost to have your domain listed in the auction? Do you only pay a commission if it sells and your name is picked to be featured?

Hi dcristo, the commission is 15%. This was my second auction and I'm learning each time. I purposely kept the reserve low this time (unlike my entry at the recent Snapnames auction which got no bids). I was concerned however when my domain got placed in the new low/no reserve auction as I was never asked if this would be OK and it was a new and unproven feature.

doobee, let us know when you get the payment. I've heard that the Traffic auctions take a ridiculous amount of time to close, one reason why I haven't entered any names there yet.

There were some pretty high bids. People.net at $400k, Mom.info at $20k (wasn't this name being sold here for 3-4k?)

I've had good experiences w/ Moniker, it's worth the wait.

1 of my domains sold for $15k, reserve was 10k.

You have to be realistic listing reserve, w/ the current market, etc, if you want cash, go lower with your reserve.

Congrats Doobee.

Cheers everyone and thank you again, Moniker team. :)

Taking bids "off the wall" is common practice in any auction house, selling any item where they have a reserve. They do it to save time as there's no point messing about with bids that go nowhere near the reserve.

I don't think it hurts sellers in the slightest, after all they are the ones who are setting the reserve to begin with. It also stops people entering items into auction as a means of having them evaluated, and if they didn't do it then every man and their dog would be entering names with high reserves and just seeing what they go to....by bumping the bidding up to near the reserve straight off then it makes it a pointless exercise in terms of getting an "evaluation" and you get more domains which owners are genuinely looking to sell.

I have a fair bit of experience with auctions (although not in relation to domains) and I thought last nights auction was very well handled. OK, so the auctioneer got himself a little tied in knots a couple of times, but you try standing up there and keeping your concentration for as long as they do and see how you manage....lol.
It leaves everyone who wasn't there thinking that people actually bid up to those amounts though and impossible to know when the pass was real bid or not.

It all depends on whether there is an acquisition cost involved. Would you be prepared to lose money by not using a reserve?

Hey brother MJnels, thanks for the recognition. I noticed shows.net failed to reach, sell at that mark.

Whilst how much we spent last night is not important, I will say that I thought the auction was well conducted and the sale prices seemed reasonable for buyers and sellers, in most cases. The most encouraging part was the quality. Regardless of whether a name sold or not, the list was captivating and worth hanging in, if only for the amusement that a live auction brings.

I concur with the sentiment that some of the lower reserve names did really well in the sense of interest, bidding and sales (was equally surprised that some were passed in for the money offered!).

Personally I felt it was a great auction. The sale completion process however is as frustrating for purchasers as sellers (still waiting for details on how to get people their money and of course secure ownership of names).
