Raider,

You da man. Your right on target. I even agree, that it was "inappropriate" to call most domainers "losers". Its true, but it didnt need to be said. One too many scotch after work I am afraid.

I am SINCERELY sorry , if I offended anybody. I guess I figured, nobody would take it to heart. It was a general observation meant to generate discussion. Clearly, there are the exceptions. There are always success stories. There are obviously succesful domainers.

97% Unsuccesful (notice I didnt say losers). 3% Succesful is pretty decent for any industry.

Respectfully
LB

Well a couple of you have said the magic formula, so though of you not making any money, listen to the theme of us that are. Sure you can buy yourself into it via a broker, and hit the ground running, but very unrealistic for most people out there on penny budgets.

The key is monetizing your own content rich websites via google adsense and other sponsorships, so you have a steady income as well as building the value of the domain name for after market purpose if your intentions are a flip. This way you are making a daily living at minimum surviving if not living large off the daily revenue until you flip a domain for a large amount. If you have been domaining for longer than 6 months you need to change tact if your not making money. Start trying a different method because you are doing something wrong.

This is the best way to turn a bad domain portfolio into a good one. For though of you have have purchased dumb domain names as newbs. I will say it again as I did in my last post, it doesn't matter how dumb the domain name is if it has (organic) traffic behind it.

Guys, I have been in the online industry for around 8 years recently laid off 8 months ago last Nov 2007 from a high ranking position in a ecommerce software development company. I'm one of those dumb people who has been buying up domain names for the last 8 years paying annual renewal fees at the tune of $6000 a year and my domain names had 10 inches of dust. I never used them, they never saw the light of day or a nameserver until 4-5 months ago when I got into this business and blew the dust off.

With a lot of dedicated 15 - 20 hour days 6 - 7 days a week for the last almost 5 months I am doing good and I will be a millionaire in about 7 - 10 months time if I keep my pace. I have gone from 600 domain names when I started to more than 1000 domain names today, all my new domain purchases have been subsidized buy my daily revenue coming in. In this period of time I have sold a couple of domains as I already told you for greater than $500 and a few of over $1000 and one over $2,500. I can promise you these domains were only worth registration fee 5 months ago. My 1st domain sold was www.VIPnation.com for $2,500 which I paid under $2 for on ebay ans sold via private party, and the last two I sold were on ebay. www.HouseVilla.com which I purchased for $7 and I sold for over $500 and www.planethollywoodhotel.com which I paid under $2 for and I sold for over $1000.00 on eBay. there was a couple sales in between. These domains were all bought and sold in a matter of 4 - 5 months, you do the math, whats my ROI?

Long story short, hard work, dedication, moxy, and persistence pays off if you stay positive and think positive.

This is my full time job at the moment until I find a company to work for, and by the looks of things and my future I will not need to work for anyone else again. I see myself making a large 6 to 7 figure income in the next 10 months +/-

For though of you discouraged research www.plentyoffish.com in google. This guy is projected to make 10 million this year after being in business for almost 6+ years i think, but was making $10,000 a month with in his 1st 2 years of plentyoffish.com researching the history of plentyoffish.com may be inspiring for you to read. It was me!!

Although it may be true that many who call themselves "domainers" will never be successful while others will only lose money and not learn from their mistakes... It is not necessary to use the title "Domainers are Losers" which is inflammatory and will only offend everyone in the domain business.

I appreciate the kind words!! I may also have an unfair advantage over other newbies though. Although I am a new soul to domaining I am a very old soul when it comes to the online industry as a whole. I forgot to mention that www.plentyoffish.com is a absolutely 100% free dating system, that is basically a front blog for profiles and back end forum for dating and meeting others. The revenue is generated purely from google adsense and nothing else. Even though this guy is making estimated 10 million this year he still lives in his humble apartment.

come on guys, how many of you would have registered a domain name or purchased aftermarket www.plentoffish.com, I can promise you no one here in this forum. This guy registered a dumb name and made his million.

Thanks for the great read tldrental. :)
I have published it on my blog (hope you dont mind)
Thanks,
Kross.

Again thank you for the kind words, and absolutely use it in your blog.

But I think that's a great name, and perfect for a dating site! It's what every mother or granny used to say to a dumped son or daughter - 'There's plenty more fish in the sea.'

I'm a newbie domainer, but have been writing all my life (since age 5) and that's an industry where it's really is hard to make it. I've seen statistics stating that of the 10% of writers who ever have anything published (including a letter to a newspaper), only 1% ever earn enough to make a living from it, and of that 1% an even tinier number become wealthy through writing. And up to now (that is, pre-Internet days) you've had to have your work accepted not only by a publisher but before that by an agent, before the general public were able to pass judgement on it.

Domaining is certainly hard, but you feel more in control of your own destiny. However, I have to admit that I can see where the original poster is coming from. Sometimes it seems to me that the whole domaining world is one big hustle with very little hard information behind it.

In the past 3 months, though, I've made more with adsense revenue on developed sites than I did all of last year with parking.

With Adsense paying pennies for clicks and Parked paying dollars, that's hard to believe. If you dont mind, could you PM me a couple of your sites?, your obviously doing something better than what I did.

Success in life is determined by many things including one's own behavior and how they treat others and react to others. While you say domainer's are losers they can be successful if they show courtesy to their fellow human.

Success is not equivalent to wealth alone.

You always have a way with words, well said.

Ditto on that. Its hard to get the motivation when I make more money off one parked domain at parked.com vs the few sites I have running adsense combined.

.....In the past 3 months, though, I've made more with adsense revenue on developed sites than I did all of last year with parking.........

hmmmmm......that's really odd because adsense revenue is quite low vs parking firms, mostly because of the CTR on a typical website being say 4-6% with adsense vs 25-35% or even greater (sometimes a lot more and I mean a lot) with a well targeted parked page.

That means you need roughly 5 times more traffic to earn the same revenue assuming EPC is about the same (which I feel it is).

You are a genuis. Can you reveal your secret to doing so well with Adsense?

P.S. Don't misunderstand, I like Adsense and there are other advantages to it such as a way to get SE rank and build-up your traffic over time, and use it a lot but it really does not compare regards to short-term revenue vs places like fabulous.com and parked.com

I do much better with affiliate sites, especially cj, than anything else. Adsense has it's place, but I make very little from it. I like to find a product without too much competition to get higher in the rankings, for niche products that people will actually buy online, build a 2-5 page site, put it up. Works for me. Then again, this is only a part time thing for me, and I have my own servers, so whatever I make is profit, less my time & reg fees.

domaining and writing go hand in hand.

buy domains that relate to subjects you like to write about, and build content or information sites on them.

then put adsense or affiliate links on the site that relate to the content.

really, it doesn't get any easier if you're a good writer.

Sold a brandable domain today for 7K to a developer, the funny thing is I remember posting it on this forum for $500 and no takers.

I bet that happens alot here, domain doesn't sell on forum for xx and gets sold later for xxxx, or whatever. Often it comes down to the right buyer finding you, and them wanting the name badly enough.

Was just thinking about the title of this thread "Domainers are Losers" and thought it important to point out that you really only "lose" when you don't try at all. As long as you give anything you want your best shot, you have actually won no matter the outcome.

Not to say that you should take uncalculated risk, all risks should be calculated, but to deny yourself the potential for future growth, that is a lot closer to the true definition of failure.

With that in mind, even if you don't get the results you were after, that is how most of us learn anyway. In the end, success is all about making mistakes and learning from them.

mistakes -> experience -> success

Embrace mistakes, make as many of them as you can as cheaply as you can, be super diligent about learning from them and never give up on your dreams. It is that simple.

Anyone here know a good psychologist to the domainers???

Lots of nice stories here about development and adsense. But one thing I'm still not sure about is when people here are looking to buy based on traffic, many only want traffic from parked names. So, if you are developing with the goal to eventually sell based on traffic, doesn't it kind of defeat the purpose?
