Based on all these geo sales people are reporting its amazing the Tampa.info sale in early January 2009 was for only $3500 makes it sound like a real steal at $3,500.
Wow...I forgot all about that one.

Most of us perhaps think Tampa is the best way of saying Tampa Bay.

Be curious to know what the locals think and what Tampa Bay dot info would bring.

Crazy, I didn't knew THAT! I mean, I talk to that guy since 12 month about the dubai.info sale, and he had been owner of houston.info, a domain that I sold in 2007 at a TRAFFIC meeting in the auction for 17,000 Dollars (it was in New York).

Domains sometimes take strange ways. This houston.info went through MANY hands, I bought it from a russian....
Yes, interesting twists and turns. Houston.info sold in April 2004 for $4000 in a private sale that was listed at DNJournal. It was the subject of forum posts and discussion. I remember your sale of it for $17k at the 2007 auction. Houston is a great metro city. The .info extension is a perfect fit.

On the Tampa.info sale, Josh Metnick (owner of Chicago.com and Illinois.com) purchased Tampa.info for $10,000 years ago. Whoever nabbed it for $3500 at Sedo won a mini-lottery.

I've got a bunch of dubaithis and dubaithat .coms. I was wondering if that was a mistake though considering the UAE has their own TLD, .ae, and are talking about .dubai as well.

Thoughts?

I'm new to all this arena, so please do not laugh....

I got approval for delegation for the pTLD .dubai by INAIC. I thought it would be interesting to own that, so I applied.

What does this mean?

Thanks.

Hi,

could you repeat that? You got approval by WHOM to apply for ".dubai" WHERE and WHEN exactly?

I am at all ICANN meetings since mid 2004, and I am applying myself for a TLD, so I am a bit irritated...

I applied through tld.name, this was after reading some news article in June or July last year.

???

Look, I founded a company 4 years ago, that WILL go for a cityTLD.

I have been at all ICANN meetings since mid 2004. I sat in the GNSO meetings when the new RFP rules where made. You probably do not even know what a RFP is, or who GNSO is.

I have been in Dubai in Feb last year at the regional ICANN meeting, and spoke to Dubai officials. Dubia already aplied in the 2000 round for .dubai.

I bet 10 trillion dollars that you will NEVER ever in your live will be able to run the TLD .dubai! Because it will be operated by the same entity that operates .ae.

Ask yourself: Have you EVER been in Dubai? Have you ever attended a single ICANN meeting?

If you have to answer two "no's", then stop dreaming, please. You are NOT starting a gTLD just like that. Specially not a geoTLD. And specially not, if you have zero roots to that region.

I am sorry to disrupt your dream, but you are about 9 years to late. Imagine you go in a pub, explaining people that you are a domainer, and that you sell domains! And then a John Doe says: "Well, I will register sex.com tomorrow, and sell it to Plaboy". What would you think?

Right.

The reason I write this so sarcastic: To shy others away from dreaming the same dream. A new gTLD costs you about 2 million dollars, MINIMUM. The application fees alone are 250,000 Dollars (a quarter million) - nonrefundable!

Yea, you're right about a lot of what you said, without a doubt. But, I do know what an RFP is, lol, and I actually did grow up in Dubai so I do have some links to the region (although they aren't the links you're probably referring to).

Dubai is just a string after all, not sure why attending an ICANN meeting or having been to dubai is important to register a public TLD anyways.

But thanks for your cawky response, if I was "dreaming" I would've at least put up something or progressed with it since I got approval last year...but I haven't bothered cause I'd rather play basketball on my weekends.

Hi,

whow, you grew up there? Great. I like Dubai. I only think, it has some problems now.

RFP is the Request for Proposal. GNSO is the Generic Names Support Organisation, one of the subgroups of ICANN. And I guarantee you, that you won't get a TLD if you havn't shown up at at least 5 ICANN meetings. Better 10 or 15. There is no rule in the book, but thats how it works.

tld.name is a chinese company. I hope they didn't charged you money. If so, you can sue them in the court in China.

Dubai is maybe a "only a string" to you, but it means a lot more to the people in Dubai. And the Dubai local authorities PLUS the country of United Arab Emirates have to acknowledge your application, read the RFP and the GAC recommendations. So even IF they wouldn't run for .dubai you had no chance to get it. Applying for a geoTLD is very difficuilt. And I assume the RFP comes not before 2010 or even 2011. And then there are these 250,000 US Dollars application fee. Nonrefund.

Thanks, that was an informative response. Why does it show a private registration when you do a whois on the dubai tld?

???

To clarify the situation:

Essentially there are only 280 domains existing in the world. And there is only ONE registry and one whois. The registry is called IANA, and their WHOIS is http://whois.iana.org/.

Look "com" up, you see the registrant is Verisign. Look "dubai" up, and you see its not yet registered. Look "de" up, and you see its registered in 1986 and the registrar is DENIC. It's fascinating, the namefiles look exactly like the namefiles in the subdomain ".com". Owner, Admin, Tech, and the most important, the Nameservers. Registration date, but no expiration date.

All other "whois" and "registries" are only sub-registries for second and thirdleveldomains.

So: Where did you discovered a "private registration" for the "tld" "dubai"?

What the average domainer calls "a domain" is in truth a SLD under a TLD, a combination "sld.tld". The REAL domains are what we usually call "TLD". UK people even talk about thirdleveldomains, like london.co.uk.

TLD's are a very complicated topic. You should not see them as something as easy as Secondleveldomains.

Ok, I did some reading.

1) This site tells me there are multiple registrars for different types of TLDs: http://inaic.com/index.php?p=tld-registrars
2) This is the global whois for TLDS: http://inaic.com/index.php?p=global-tld-whois

ICANN is specifically for the gTLDs, which are extremely difficult and as you said, expensive. However, other types of TLDs can be registered online.

So my question, why would INAIC allow me to delegeate .dubai? (all TLDs registered through ICANN or other TLD registrars resolve the same data)
