interesting thread on .in

while reading this I found 2 - one word .in and .co.in names...

Being a beginner in this how big a differance does the "plural" form of the word make?

Exp:
fox vs. foxs

Hi,

We made a 48 hours coupon for dnforum users.

This means all users can buy .in domains with a $2 rebate.

This means .in can be registered for $17.95 and all the other .in extensions for 7.95

It's only valid for 48 hours. When checking out use the coupon code DNFORUM

With kind regards

17$ sounds a bit steep, resellers.co.in does it for 13$ .in and 7$ .co.in

Nice to see this topic go to 3 pages. Thanks for all that posted it was a joy to read all your replies.

Hi,

Great extension, huge potential, English is by far the most used language in Internet India. I personally have sold just below $xxx, xxx of .co.in / .in names and have retained the majority of the top premium names here:
[mod] Please do not link to offsite sales pages here. [/mod]
There is only one direction the prices of these will go IN !!

BTW - I like Shop.co.in , it is becoming huge in India, online shopping.

I think you should have a close look at this presentation of the 1991 Census from the Central Institute of Indian Languages:

http://www.ciil.org/languages/map4.html

Had a job to find it, but the percentage of First Tongue English Speakers is 0.021%.

Of course English has predominated to date, as using anything else has been all but impossible. Only the major Indian Alphabets have been put into Unicode and even those fairly recently.

Everywhere else when given the option to surf in their own language, Internet user have without exception opted to do this. India will be the exception.

Obviously, dot IN is going to be huge, but not in the English Language. Those who are capable of using English are already predominantly online. Those that aren't which is the vast majority are inhibited by poverty and language. As the economic expansion enfranchises more and more and with the development of internet content in local language, you will see a massive expansion of Internet usuage, but believe me it will not be in English!

very nice thread on Indian domain. We are still a developing nation and at the same time the fastest growing in IT sector. The co.in extention is already famous as sites like google, yahoo use them adn regarding .in it will surely take time. But as of now it is the .co.in domains that have an upper hand.

This discussion around language has been quite interesting. I'll add my 2 cents:

- hindi and the other native languages are clearly the languages spoken by the masses
- however, English is used predominatly by the educated elite. The CIA factbook states it best: "English enjoys associate status but is the most important language for national, political, and commercial communication; Hindi is the national language and primary tongue of 30% of the people."

English is used throughout India. It is on billboards, in newspapers and even on street signs.

Anway, I'm curious if anyone has looked in to large scale domain transfers (100+ domains) to take advantage of lower pricing at different registrars? The registrars I ended up with after the namerush charge ~$18 and I'd love to reduce that for coming years. What fees are typically charged, and where should they be sent?

Exactly...English is also the official academic language at the college, university and professional levels...and has been so for over two centuries.

The telling thing will of course be Overture scores for the various translations of popular keywords. Of course, as Yahoo does not support any of the Indian languages such information is not available. This situation will either change rapidly or Google which already support 5 local languages will come to dominate the Indian Search Market.

Internet penetration in India is still only 3.6%. Exsiting usuage will obviously be skewed towards the English speaking elite, who will elect to use English because the functionality of the alternatives is still very limited. Straight line extrapolation of the graph though is meaningless.

As the web content in the various Indian Language groups grows, many that now access the web in English will switch to their mother tongue. Also, as the web becomes available to wider population the percentages of new users that are either able or willing to access the Internet in English will drop proressively.

Like India the defacto European Language for Government and Commerce is now English, but I wouldn't read too much into that either!

the fact of matter is English is catching very fast in India. Ppl now like to talk in english rather than local language. The professional education is completely in English. This is where India has an upper hand when compared to China ( in IT sector). As far as I know more english domain is registered by Indians and what's funny is some domains are fusion of local language and english that leads to really cool names :cheeky:

Yes, India does have an advantage over China in software and communication and this is due to wider English Usage.

The success of mass marketing will rely on usage not just from the professional elite. Much of this speculation is based on population size and in percentage terms the level of English use is very low. Furthermore, languages don't just "catch on" they have to be learnt!

Registration of IDN in the dot in extension is not yet possible so it is clear that they have to be registered in Romanic Characters.

Much of the registration currently is being done by speculators and foreign companies, which will tend to focus on English. In the case of the latter, it may well be a stop gap measure until more effective form of Internet Marketing develop.

Cool is not the measure of value you should adopt. Usage is the key, and that is still difficult to establish let alone project.
