Experience with IDN has shown that you cannot develop an extension or a genre of domains out of a hole.

There has been huge development on Japanese IDN, the take up by large corporates and the type in from surfer is Squat, and IDN have a built in advantage that Mobi just doesn't.

By contrast, in Russia where there is no great culture of using dot Com as an extension and very little by way of development we are now starting to get very significant level of traffic. This is happening because of the distribution of browser that support IDN is happening in Russia, but not as yet in the Far East.

The bottom line is that there has to be a rationale, and your target market has to identify both with your extension and your keyword. The appropriate mechanism also need to be in place. If none of this is true, all the "development" in the World won't mean squat!

Just as there is not for dot Pro, dot Name, dot Travel or dot Museum.

The question is, if there are no obstacles, why are people not spontaneously typing in dot Mobi? The answer is that there is NO mind share. That has to be created some how, and my point was that will only occur with massive advertising expenditure. By contrast it would seem that cyrillic IDN.com is proving intuitive to Russians even though ASCII.com only ever just got a toe in the door.

The distinction between IDN's and mobi's is an important one. There is a huge difference between trying to create a demand for somthing and harvesting a demand for somthing. Said it before...mobi is trying to create a demand where one does not exist. The mobile internet does not need a new domain ext for delivery. IDN's focus on harvesting a demand that already exists.

You put that so eloquently. Exactly what I would like to have said myself.

Poke, poke, poke...

going back, how many extensions do we need, prefixes, suffixes, subdomains to say one thing...mobile? Who is going to reel in or standardize the millions of possibilities and the millions of different ways each person could come up with a URL or link to their mobile site?

IDN is very valid and very near. Even then, that is going to be added need to standardize the mobile connectivity issue with es, cn, jp, in, tw, de and so on. So we are not just talking .com. We are talking every extension on the planet just about and every one coming up with kazillions of subdomains.

Mind bobbling. To me .mobi would be a common thread needed even more to tie this in.

Going back to bed, got up to let the dogs out...literally.

BREAKING NEWS!!!

Dot mobi have retracted their press release saying that record sales of .mobi at Sedo auction!

Looks like the penny may have dropped after all.

Billbo - you seem to have posted this everywhere - any reason?

Seems like a very good place to post it would be Sedo. Let them explain what is (or is not going on) and how they are handling the situation. Plus, let them confirm this matter.

Jasdon11, yes I posted it wherever I thought those concerned might get to see it the quickest. Imagine if you were the winner of a $xx,xxx .mobi domain in the second auction, and today you were making payment to Sedo, would the news not cause you to pause and think about the consequences of paying?

It was essential to warn these people that things are not as straight forward and complete as Sedo would have you think.

If the multi-posting of this news annoyed anyone I apologise, but I would do it again to save another domainer making a payment for a domain that s/he might never own because of the legal battle that has been joined today. If these second auction winners pay then how would they get their money back from Sedo whilst this goes to court?

My actions may not be appreciated by everyone on here (or N P), but if I have helped one domainer save his/her money then I have been successfull, if I have not been successful at least I have done what is right.

Fair enough Billbo - didn't mean to cause offense.

In other words, it is about consumer choice .... So it makes a lot of sense to have the choice between ESPN.com and ESPN.mobi ESPN.com is still available to all - including those mobile users (presumably with time to kill) who really *do* want to read about Brett Favre's favorite pregame meal, learn about the childhood memories of Randy Moss or see video of Shaq's south Beach mansion. But ESPN.mobi provides a slick, efficient, well-crafted set of just scores and headlines relevant to the user's very specific mobile usage context.

it's not about consumer choice

for over a year we tell all mobile devices where to go on our main sites

they can type in whatever they want or link to whatever they want

but our code knows what they are on and they go to a m. sub directory of our name.mobi

so .mobi will be an 'ok' tld to develop in, but just doing a sub directory or a level 3 directory with mobi content and a sniffer to send mobile devices there is enough

now if google ever gets around to realizing there's a lot of great .mobi content out there and their searches STILL fail to send mobile searches to good mobi content, that will be what makes or break mobi as a tld

if you have solid mobi content on mobi sites and google starts directing mobile serp's to real mobi content

then bingo

you will have two level of serps

developers who have traditional content for desktop/laptop devices

developers that actually created mobi content on either .mobi sites or on mobi directories or subs

we started to see most of our business clients FIND us from mobile devices two years ago

they didn't look for us being on mobi nor did google send them to us for being on mobi devices

they found our normal serps and went to the site and then contacted us

OR

many just use the mobile devices to call the numbers on maps and places now

either way, we see a lot of business owners find us via mobile devices

so many execs today do not even use laptops and desktops to search

when they need something they look on iphone and call who is on maps or who they can search via mobile content

I myself use my iphone for most communication now

very little email

in fact, I created gmail accounts just to catch my emails

gmail is a great mobile app for iphones

so email, the new google app with voice search, text message, everything is going mobile now

even youtube

we use a ton of youtube videos on clients site

since youtube has low res videos for mobile

we had to create mobi sites for all clients now

just to serve the videos ourselves to get HD quality back on their sites

average short web video is 50Mb to 100Mb for youtube to serve

the mini mobile HD videos are 10% of that size

so it makes sense to serve HD small files yourself

we would even serve the HD videos that are big, but you get serp pop utilizing youtube since google owns it

anyway, funny to see how 3 years ago mobi was dead

yet today mobile devices are everywhere

yet the net is still behind on mobi content

so google will be the force that pushes mobi to a major major tld

when google serp's ignore all the popular sites that not mobi friendly

then you will see the scramble to get on major mobi names

So what does a .mobi domain name or website offer that you can't get or do on a .com website?

mobi compared to .com

easy

.mobi is supposed to have mobile device friendly content

so when google makes the switch to mobi relevant serps on all those people looking for stuff now on mobile devices

what .tld will pop

so you get positioned

relevant mobile content on .mobi keywords

you can take over the new serps overnight on huge cpc terms

who is #1 organic or places today for serps on mobile devices will not be there tomorrow when then switch by goog is made

so mobi offers relevant mobile friendly content

.com sites blow on mobi devices

and even when they do a m. subdomain or try to match the keyword.com with a keyword.mobi

the mobi site usually blows

but you do have some excellent .mobi friendly sites, that are heavy on HD mobi video (The best format for mobi is VIDEO)

if google thought mobi was dead would they be getting their own smart phone out and buying the top mobi app ad company there is?

mobi young man

think mobi...
