Experience with IDN has shown that you cannot develop an extension or a genre of domains out of a hole.
There has been huge development on Japanese IDN, the take up by large corporates and the type in from surfer is Squat, and IDN have a built in advantage that Mobi just doesn't.
By contrast, in Russia where there is no great culture of using dot Com as an extension and very little by way of development we are now starting to get very significant level of traffic. This is happening because of the distribution of browser that support IDN is happening in Russia, but not as yet in the Far East.
The bottom line is that there has to be a rationale, and your target market has to identify both with your extension and your keyword. The appropriate mechanism also need to be in place. If none of this is true, all the "development" in the World won't mean squat!
