when you search 'scenery' in google.ca you are first.

when you search 'scenery' in google.com it's further below. I didn't know google.ca gave preference to Canadian sites in searches, I thought you had to select the 'pages from Canada' button.

but it's still real good because millions of Canadians must use google.ca

Anybody used to own some nice .ca domains and let them expire?

From 2002 to around 2004 I let the following expire:

jetskis
monkeys
bonbons
internetcafe
internetcafes
investmentbroker
investmentbrokers

Maybe not totally premium but names I wouldn't let go now.

I also remember almost regging monsters/ca when it was available. Kept checking it for a few days, then when I finally decided to go someone else already had.

Anyone else have any similar stories?

I would have loved some of those, especially the investment broker ones.

But we held monsters/ca for years. I regged it in 01. I sat on it for about 18 months and finally set it up. And discovered I had been losing around 150-300 hits a day for all that time. I guess you don't really want to hear we sold it for 13.5 k last year (unreported sale).

What kind of a site did you set up pl?? Curious to know how much work you put into it and the cost too. Trying to learn from the Pros.

Thanks.

This is where I made the biggest mistake of my domain business. I set up with 7search for PPC. I had never used it before but was hearing that PPC was the way to go for parking domains. I had over 100-120k a month in traffic going through 7search and was earning a whole $50 a month on average. I couldn't figure out how Franky (name admin) and Yun Yee were able to hold such huge portfolios and make their $$$ by PPC.

After about a year 7search actually terminated our account and stiffed me for our last cheque. Apparently our traffic wasn't "effective" enough for them. It soured me on the PPC for years and it wasn't until I tried a few (3) domains at Fab that earned the $50 monthly by themselves that I came back to it. UP to that point I paid for the entire portfolio out of my own pocket.

Now of course I understand that 7search were idiots in the PPC field and get paid thousands for the same traffic I gave away to those morons.

But it probably cost me a couple of years and definitely slowed down my acquisitions during those years. :upset:

My loss, that's what I get for sitting on the fence, though times were different back then with .ca domains. Good for you though! Surprised at the traffic it was getting, but there was a movie called Monsters around that time.

This is why I hesitate less now when regging, if it's a good name and available I'll try to take it when I can.

Thank you DropWizard, for your explanation and well, it's always nice to know that there are people willing to share their heart and experience with others.

Thanks.

I am sooo bad at this. I know I should put my names to work for me. Here are a list of the (all hand reg'd) .ca's I got. Most are crap I think. Can I get suggestions on what to do with them? Sell, develop or park?

tweenies
escortclassifieds
condobuyer
newhomebuyer
loftbuyer
faxing
loftguide
myphotogallery
mystocks
scalix
speedfox
webhostlist

holy crap...I forgot I registered half of these...

Thanks in advance

I like these the best of your lot.

You'd probably do best to develop some information sites related to the keywords, and put some adsense on them. For tweenies, I would make a directory with links to websites that 'tweens' might like - e.g.: dress up or makeover sites.

In the meantime park the names so you at least know if any are getting type in traffic.

Pool once again walks away a bunch I wanted but I refuse to use them anymore. Piss on them. LeftWing for example - a $20 domain at best, is now a minimum of $60 US. If you are bidding on it you are going to overpay imo. :) I have enough politics related sites to know that the niche pays on the bottom half.

Nice catch again this week DropWizard.

I got scammed.. no actually I got scammer - that's it! LOL I'll just build a simple little one page blurb and funnel the traffic to another site of mine scam related - Get Rich Fast - another regfee tbr grab some months back. Number one or two on google for get rich fast - get rich quick scam etc etc. :)

Nice names, but are you grabbing them for ppc, to develop sites, or just to hold for the future? I wouldn't think these names would get much ppc - just wondering what your strategy is.

Side note: Number of .ca's regged is almost at 900,000 everyone!

And this .ca thread is almost at 50 pages!

Looks like we got 29.ca in the drop today :eek:k:

Been a while since I've seen a .ca name drop and wondered how could the previous owner let it go! The guy must know absolutely nothing about domain value, or else he passed away
