Would we benefit from a private appraisal section?

For the first 2 years before I bought a domain I would speak to a couple people to see how much they valued it at so I would know if I was getting a good deal.

Would you like to see a place where you could get appraisals that woudn't be public for this purpose?

or would you prefer a really private section where 3-5 experts could give a value on a domain?

or would you prefer no section like this?

This would be in exclusive either way.

Would this be for names that we don't own yet as well?

Ooo...very tricky situation.

Devalue the hell out of it if someone else was interested.

Trash it, drag it through the mud, crucify it, sling mud...all because I want it too.

Other than that, I think that section would have merit.

let's say someone is interesting in purchasing a domain that you, I or someone else on the forum owns?

they want an appraisal before they buy

now what?

There is nothing in place now for this.

I was just wondering if a section like this would be useful.

A rule amendment would be better than a new section. We could just have people let us know if they don't own it.

.

I agree with this.

Ultimately anyone with an exclusive membership would *hopefully* already have a sense of value (both the buyer and seller), or at least what they would accept or be willing to spend on it and can make their own decision, regardless of what was said in a thread about it.

Ok, so it seems not many want this option.

I personally would like to get the opinions of others before buying but I think it would end up causing more trouble than benefits.

Why be so afraid of scaring off possible buyers (because of opinions in value the sellers may not like) when there are so few buyers anyway (and the rare buyers paying very low too) when this could result in more activity and excitement to the current situation which is so slow and lackluster.

i think it is a good idea.

It will work as long as the appraiser(s) are professional and keep their personal feelings out of the valuation or to use it as an oppurtunity to undervalue and scoop the name.

I don't think we really need to say if the name is owned or not - we are looking for valuations why would it matter if we owned the name already?

Adam, the problem is that there are such wide varieties of valuation for any domain, you yourself have given an example today where you say you paid $8.5k I think it was for a domain that you think others would not value above $2-$3k, so even here your valuation was circa 300% more than what you think many others would value the domain at. I just use this as an example.

The other problem is that many members do not post on this forum, here I am referring to many wealthy members who read the forum posts to look for advantages in the market - not that there is anything wrong in that, indeed it is a basic principle of business surely to gather intelligence on the market place. The problem could arise though where such discrete members take advantage of a posting for an appraisal and nip in to guzzump the poster in a prospective purchase or increase the value of a domain they are selling to a prospective purchaser. These are just some of the hurdles that would somehow need to be sorted out in my opinion before such a service went live.

Just my 2 cents as they say.

The only way it can work, without abuse, is to have a small number of volunteer appraisers; people who you somehow vet to be neutral. You could reward them with some $dnf for each post they make. Such volunteers should be members who have been here for 'awhile', who have a rating above N (for some N), and have no history of infractions.

The Admins will know of people who fit this mold, and once you have the group going, they can recommend others for inclusion. You can setup a social page just for this group, too.

These 'volunteer appraisers' are basically people who are trusted, and have expertise. Such a group might have other uses besides just appraisal.

I do not like the idea if some one posted the name that I own and want an appraisal on my name here.

I can see this either way. But the existence of the name is public info.

Low appraisals could hurt someone who had an impending sale too. Hmmm that is worrisome.

What if this appraisal section was not indexed by search engines?

Good idea. One other criteria I suggest be used is the appraisers should be members who do not commonly offer their own names for sale but may in fact be mostly a buyer or a poster over the years. That way it would lower the self-serving or friendship with other heavy sellers aspect.
