The worst lowball offers I have had are from end users. Recently sent emails for a City + RealEstate.com and received an inquiry from a Realtor. I gave them a price and ended up calling them to follow up. After a lot of time-wasting they explained how they could not afford the price, and whined about how they could not even spend $XXX on the domain! They did not make any offer but said they did not want to 'insult me' with their lowball offer.

As long as you are sitting in the profit! you can use the money to buy the next domain! Every dollar counts!

This is the best moment to domaining.
Peoples spend cash on domains more than in past.

Probably you need to find new marketing tactics for approach endusers.

The problem is people want flip names on forums...but the key is sell to endusers, not here.

One of the keys to being successful is persistence, you need to press on even when you feel like quitting.... If you want to quit Domaining, don't do it for the wrong reason, The worst thing you can do is quit because you failed, keep doing that and you'll be a failure all your life.

There is only one good reason to quit domaining: you have become so successful, that you can now turn all your attention to your ideas and your dreams, and developing interesting (and possibly, useful) websites of a personal interest.

In the mid 90's I could not afford $100 for each domain and the WHOIS interface would not return correct results every time. Oh, and I spent half of my free time chatting on IRC and the other half playing Quake :D

Glad to see another fan of Quake

I was a Doom kind of guy - we took over the computer labs at UMaine (screaming 80486!) so we could each have 3 PCs to play a network game. :)

I later got into Q3 and led the server in suicides.

Knowledge (and, yes, a bit of luck, too) makes all the difference. And, hard work. A lot of domainers kind of treat it like a hobby...That's fine....But, be realistic about your expectations....If you don't put it in, you're unlikely to get it back.

Excellent post and I agree. I look at it (at this time) as a hobby. I still have my full time job as a grunt (job done) working 45-50 hours a week for 40 hours of pay (that's what they call "hourly" now). I don't think I'll be able to quit my FT job to peruse domaining and development full time so it's a nice and cheap hobby to get into that makes a little on the side.

There is only one good reason to quit domaining: you have become so successful, that you can now turn all your attention to your ideas and your dreams, and developing interesting (and possibly, useful) websites of a personal interest.

I am no where near "successful" yet roughly 6 months ago I turned from concentrating on parking domains to development. I am dropping (or trying to sell) at least 75% of my portfolio (pesky renewal fees!) to save money and allow me to pick up the occasional backordered domain to develop.

would suggest that anyone looking for women on a domain forum think about sharpening their social skills and stepping away from the computer :)

those are good reasons to not get into domaining or to stop, but just like any kind of business, you have to make enough money to make it worth you spending your time working on that business.

Many people are successful but lose interest and move onto something else, which is OK, but losing interest because your not successful is something totally different.

In all business you will find success and failure, not just domaining.

Which segment you belong to depends primarily on attitude, learning and skill in turning that learning to profits.

And all those who succeed have faced failure, its your call whether you want to stick with that or keep trying till you do succeed.

Sensible move IMO. End users want value and if you can offer them a domain with history and some show of SE ranking in their market, you'll get far more than for a parked dud where they have to start from scratch.

Btw...I was there on Quake I and II at Barrysworld back in the 90's. Boy I miss that game and a bit of the old Clanlife *sigh*.

I haven't made squat yet selling, but I am new and only $1k into it. One bit of advice I can give newbies is to NEVER NEVER NEVER go drinking and domaining. Its funny how after 12 drinks, a seahag at the bar looks like Pam Anderson, a crappy domain too looks like a million dollar winner after the same 12 drinks. You dont want to wake up the next morning with the seahag, or the domain!

Our gold is what we make of it.

"January 11, 1849: The New York Herald reports the stories of gold in California have "set the public mind almost on the highway to insanity." Capitalizing on the fever, ship owners announce departures, merchants begin pushing the sale of India rubber boots, tents, money belts, medicine, gold testing and gold washing machines. Those on the coast begin looking for a ship. Those inland contemplate the overland routes. Men organize themselves into companies, paying equal amount and pooling together to buy the goods for the trip. They borrow money, mortgage homes, spend life savings"

IMO, don't quite. It's just getting started.
