But I take issue with companiess or government making moral, social or health related decisions for people instead of letting them make it themselves ... whether those decisions be right or wrong. I am happy to respect others opinions or beliefs as long as they aren't forced on me/others in turn negating our decisions. As adults and business professionals we are entitled to make the right ... or wrong decisions.

Hey iZoot, that I can appreciate, respecting others opinions. Thank's for the clarification. In your quote above we seem to actually be in agreement in that adults can choose. No one really knows if Afternic was forced or not but we all assume some pressure from some where did cause them to make this move. What we agree on is this; They have the same choices as adults that we do, that is to list or not list adult names and then to live with the business consequences of their decision. We'll see the results eventually. Have a great day my friends...

Glad I could clear that up :)

And I agree with you ... Afternic can do whatever they wish ... its their site.

But like you said they will have to live with the consequences of their choices ... it will definately cost them some revenue. Its not the end of the world in any case ... just another situation where others are imposing their moral/social beleifs on others. And we as individuals have the right to accept that or not. I do think that Sedo is going to see an upsurge in business.

Just incase you guys didn't see it as it was brought up on another forum this is precisely why I even brought up this topic.

"Ron James of NamePros.com (right) can't bear
to look as Roger Collins rakes in another
pot during harbor cruise poker game."

http://www.dnjournal.com/articles/events/domainfestla2006.htm

Like I said ... I have nothing to back it up but I think the move was motivated by a buy out offer from some company that doesn't approve of Porn or Gambling. Its easy to sell out your "soul" for the right price.

What domains were those?

Both have animal and sex in the same domain name. Nasty domains i don't much care for but hey they get lots of traffic.

Fab was the latest - and I can see why in their very polite email - it is against local laws. Now I just have the pair of domains forwarded to another website of mine.

Predator,

The industry is changing whether you or I or anyone else agrees with it. It wants desperately to clean itself up.

That means eventually the following types of domains will be Taboo.

TM
TM Typos
Adult
Gambling

Yes all those names will continue to make money but it will be harder and harder to find places to park them or monetize them and they will be forced to affiliate or PPS very soon.

Google and Yahoo don't want them and neither do most companies.

This should not be news to many as it's been coming down this road for a while.

ps. nothing agaisnt Predator, I was just answering his question ;)

Well two of the four you are talking about Adam deal with being they are notlegal. The other two except for the beastiality names mentioned above are legal but have different moral opinions depending on who you are talking to. Fabulous will remain the leader for gambling domains they pay the most and are based in Australia. Adult ppc never really payed much anyway did it ? I thought people made the money through affiliate programs.

I want to believe that if "G" was going to go this way and drop TM/adult/vice they would have done it before going public. The fact that they haven't done it before or after the IPO tells me it must account for a very substantial chunk of their revenue. Probablly enough to have damaged their IPO or damage their stock price now.

Either way anyone heavily invested in these types of domains should certainly have a plan B.

If google, yahoo or any other search engine were to annouce they were no longer going to be listing gambling and adult domains and/or sites within their search results would and should expect a serious backlash from the internet community aswell as the general public. These companies not accepting PPC bids or not paying out on gambling names is a different matter. If there is some great forces such as government intervention I would like to know about it because I would be one of the first ones by afternic's side in their defense. I can't imagine thats the case here. If it's a cleanup for a sell off thats another matter and hopefully they have taken into consideration the effect this decision is going to have on their future revenues.

Don't forget the .xxx TLD was brought down after the US government intervened and ICANN(T) obeyed.

Just curoius, but isn't domain speculation in itself "Gambling"
So basically, you can

"gamble with domains names"

but you can't have

"gambling domain names"?

at afternic.
Kinda sounds contadictory myself.
Allow the practice of gambling, but not names about it.
Am I correct?

At least these threads about you have been less a waste of time than your site was.

"church bingo fund raisers" - is still debateable on some christian groups.

I commend Afternic for doing such move.

Just got this:

Hi (nameslave),

As you may already be aware, Afternic has made a conscious decision to remove adult and gambling domains from our exchange. A press release was released on November 10, 2006 at: https://www.afternic.com/news.php?p=pr2006-11-10

The following 0 names have been removed from your portfolio:

Our review process was conducted utilizing a process of both technology and human analysis. Reviewing millions of names presents a unique set of challenges, and it is possible that errors may have occurred. You may request an appeal for any of the domain names listed for removal. Simply send our customer service department a message with the domain name you would like to have reviewed by visiting http://www.afternic.com/msg2nbs.php

We appreciate your business, and look forward to continuing to service your domain name needs.

Sincerely,

Roger Collins
