I predict that .Info will surpass .net,Ofcourse.com will always lead the pack,But Info is a nice ext with the right names,On the other hand i think the .us extension has a year to rise or it will flop just as the fad ext .name did. .in and co.in seem to be on the rise,But the .Info has bright future imo

Predictions are wonderful things, but I prefer them to be backed by facts where available, or congent arguments where the facts are difficult to establish. Current registration trends and indeed reported sales suggest that dot net is infact on the ascendency. Dot INFO has a lot to prove.

The increase in .net registrations is due to people registering them for the sole purpose of testing the traffic, most are subsequently dropped.

Registration stats (last 24 hours). http://www.whois.sc/internet-statistics/

.NET – Registered: 7,570 Deleted: 22,534

Personally I think .info is a far stronger extension than .net, it's more versatile for one thing, very few names "work well" with .net.

The cctld's have their own value, of course. From all tld's, however, the .COM is God (cheers DotComGod :) I have dropped all my .INFO's. There is no point of holding the .INFO if you do not owe the .COM equivalent!

Lets assume you have the .INFO but you do not have the .COM. If you decide to invest and develop a brand based on the .INFO site, then almost 1/3 of the traffic will go to the .COM. In other words, you just invest 1/3 of your efforts and ad expenses into your .COM competitor - just like that out of friendly feelings! :cheeky:

can you actually back up your claim that you will lose 1/3 (33.33 %) of your traffic/expenses into your .com competitor???????

I am sure you will lose some traffic, but that goes for any non .com tld, and I *know* from my sites, it sure isnt 1/3, especially the ones I took time to properly advertise and optimize...

...

I am afraid the situation is even worse! If you have the .INFO and I have the .COM, with just a fraction of your marketing efforts and the right optimization as per your .INFO site content, I can ruin all your good ideas... Guaranteed!

Can you tell me, how many .INFO,s do we have in top 100 000 sites?

If you own .com's of any value I would have thought it would be worth trying to get the .net and .info names at least. To allow someone to trade off your brand/name/goodwill for the sake of $10 a year each is madness.

1/3 is probably a bit high given bookmarks and search engines  but have you seen how much the equivalent .com is fetching these days, that price difference can sure be used for some serious marketting / development

my point is simple (and your point is understandable but like i said applies to any non .com tlds).
If I brand my .info enough, and the keyword makes sense with .information, and I search optimize it, and build a large site, the dent from you doing something with the .com (assuming you are not infringing on copyright and copying the exact site) is minimal.

as to your second question about how many .info we have in the top 100000 sites, I am not sure what you definae as 'top'. also, why restrict your query to just .info, and not place other tlds there as well.
of course com is king. but info is a baby that is groing fast, and with the right applications, it can be and many time is successful.

assuming a third is lost to .com then the reverse is also true ,that means .com is now losing 75% of traffic to other competeing sites in same keyword when the 75% figure used to probably be 5-10% ,,,looks like .com is the only one with huge traffic losses.

reatilers compete on the same corner for hundres of years for the consumer dollar the net is no different.

I mean Alexa top 100 000 in terms of traffic. Probably 99.9% of these are .COMs. This is quite a proof of what I am trying to say - if you mean serious business, then .COM is the only choice. That's it!

99.9% is WAY off – think of all the ccTLD's like .co.uk and .de, not to mention other gTLD's like .org.

The world doesn't end with .com, that school of thinking is so 1999

Of the top "English" 100 (100,000 too many to check)

.com 83
.co.uk 5
.net 4
.org 3
.com.au 2
.gov 1
.ca 1
.co.in 1

Most of the businesses in there were established before .info came along too :)

I also agree that a 33% loss is way off the mark.

It could be that something like 33% of genuine type-ins are lost to the .com, but even that is probably very high.

For a developed site, I would expect that genuine type-ins may be as little as 5-10% of visits and the the rest would be from bookmarks, links and search engines.

If we you look at the alexa rating for comcast.net, it is 43. If the .com was getting 33% of the traffic, then I guess the alexa ranking would be somewhere between 70 and 200?

It is actually at 1603 and that is with a well developed site that will be getting its own traffic on top of any loss from the .net.

Just my 2 centavos.

Of course, every rule has an exception but this is only to confirm the rule. I have already mentioned that cctlds are a different story. But speaking about tlds I would never invest time and money to develop a site that is not .COM. I can see no reason why should I pay a kind of a 'tax' (10% minimum of all the investment) to a competing .COM should I have decided to invest in the .INFO equivalent for instance? The only reason to buy a non .COM tld would be for a reselling purpose!

IMHO .info will never surpass .net. You can quote stats and opine all day long, but the stats also reflect subjectivity on the part of individuals renewing and dropping. My research also shows a substantial drop in .nets, but that doesn't change my opinion of the pecking order.

Ask yourself this question: If a VC was to come along and offer you a substantial and acceptable amount for a share in your site, what extensions of the domain is he/she going to ensure belong to you, when the due diligence checks are made? If you answered anything else but .com and .net you are wrong IMHO.

.info's are making progress slowly, they are getting more widely used.
http://digital-lifestyles.info/default.asp is on news.google.com today

Even the British Government uses them http://www.ukresilience.info/home.htm
