Congratulations... but tell us the name already! :D

My guess is this is a great biz to be in if you know what you are doing, and so far my certainty is that I do not know what I am doing.

ps. Impulsiveness combined with ignorance leads to a squandering of assets. Greed on top, major squandering. I have no one to blame for my stumbling other than myself. The Greek adage is, {moderation in all things".....

So, knowing that, I am now resolved to take a more methodical approach. It is only by sheer luck at the blackest moment that I have survived. Thus, I think not to repeat my mistakes. I hope.

Thus, the key for me, and perhaps others, is to have some plan, some idea on how to proceed, before you register names. For me, I perceive it as some PLAN ON HOW TO SELL NAMES. Previously, I thought that the name being a good idea was sufficient, couple with a plan for development. I am mostly out of that, because one person such as myself has only enough energy to develop few concepts. For me, the fewer the better, so as not to lose focus.

Tonight I saw a tv advert for genuity.com, a made up word, with connotation to genius and ingenuity. But I dont remember if indeed I ever knew, what the company is about. This then is to me the advantage of a name like hotels.com. I favor names that state the propositional meaning in the name for development. If you can't get the generic seminal name, than perhaps you must get hotelreservationclerks.com as your second choice. Or maybe a gimmick. I look for gimmicks in that the market seems to dwell on the generics, which I cant get. Second choices seem too numerous to have the supply/demand equation on the side of the seller.

One of my latest gimmicks is ComComedy.com, and ComComic.com, comcomics.com..... I have some belief these are reasonable propositions to take me into a profit. As I have some interest in comedy, with family members of some professional stage and media experience in comedy, I feel destiny justifies me pursuing insane longshots anyway.

At Afternic, I felt there was too much negativity and not enough genuine discussion on how to derive money from our endeavors. This forum is much more professional than afternic. However, I do see some concentration on sarcasm, which from my vantage, I am unable to determine whether it stems from jealousy or superior knowledge.

Obviously, most of us know the difficulties and pitfalls of investing in names, either for resale or website development, and the newbies who dont will usually find out rather fast.

Also obviously, there does indeed exist a name business that offers opportunity, however remote, to earn a large sum on a small investment, perhaps only slightly more likely than a lottery. This is evidenced by the tens of millions of dollars presently being spent on US television, for anyone to see, in order to brand dotcom names. If in fact the internet did not present large companies mega capital growth possibilities, then these endeavors would not be seen. Moreover, as much information in this arena is secret, we may be rational in assuming that the tip of the iceberg shows us where there is smoke theres fire.

Also, it is clear that international enterprise is in fact embracing website building, and is buying names. I can personally attest as witness that a large Oriental corporation has within the last few weeks invested at least fifty thousand dollars in names, based on the implication from names that have changed hands. Part of that comes from names advertised for sale and then transferred from the American speculators to the bona fide foreign corporation.

Anyone can claim anything, and for those who demand proof, probably most instances will not be verified. This is because the marketplace customs militate against it. Buyers do not want the price publicized in many instances. Sellers do not want the name publicized, as that might reveal trade secrets in selecting and marketing names.

I do not rely on what people tell me concerning their sales. I have seen people claiming sales on ebay, that do not reflect in the ebay completed items sale. I have seen reported sales on afternic that are not reflected in changes of whois records. I evaluate the market based upon what I see large established companies doing with their advertising, primarily, and websites, secondarily.

I attempt to be logical, mathematical, scientific, and an economist in my analysis. Because however much data is either hidden or difficult to retrieve, I admit I am but a blind pig plowing for acorns.

On the other hand, I wish members would be generous in supplying their wisdom without ridiculing other members posts. Most posts speak for themselves more than less without a whole lot of interpretation and commentary.

Perhaps though my post here is the most worthless of all, and if so, I apologize. My excuse is that I did my best to make a humble contribution.

Turned down 5.5K for jehad.com? Maybe I should reconsider my decision not to try to sell my 72virgins.com set!

My highest (and only) "sale": autographed first-edition book, T-shirt, and letter-opener for my squat-- c-span.net to c-span. Hey, I'm proud of that shirt and plan to keep it, even in the domain-name business!

I can only give you an honest "average" for the domains that I have sold over the years: $3,945! If you want to dig a little deeper to find out which domains, you don't have to look too far ... remember the "other" place? Look at the profile. For the rest, you may e-mail me here directly from the site.
Hope that helps,
Meg :)

No, I sold it in June 2001 in a down market. . .

During the drop, nobody wanted it. It was avilable 45 minutes afterwards and I figured what they heck. Afterall, I did have StaffordLoans myself. About 3 weeks later the CEO of FinancialAid.com called me.

He said that he haev been watching the name for a few months and that he wanted it. He obvioulsy did not have drop knowledge. Anyway, we talked for awhile and felt each other out... I said I wanted $10,000 - $15,000. A few weeks later he got in touch with me and said "We will give you your $10,000".
