How about, when a cellphone visitor accesses sports.com, it redirects to mobi.sports.com ? Why do we need a separate TLD for device-specific content? In fact, most new web-enabled cellphones have browsers that render web pages exactly as a computer-based browser would do.

If you ever get an answer to this question, let me know.

Tell me one thing: What all can you do on your mobile phone? Can you browse through wikipedia? No...Can you watch streamlined Youtube videos? No...(other than in the iPhone, and that too only on a wifi). Can you read a 5000 word New York Times article? No...

All those talking about mobile internet replacing normal internet are forgetting one huge thing: a mobile has at most, a 2.5" screen. There's only a limited amount of information you can view on it. You can't read a 10,000 word Wikipedia article with a hundred sublinks. You can't do research for your college project on your mobile phone. You can't do research on your stocks on your mobile phone (well, technically you can do all of this, but do you really wanna scroll through 10,000 words of information? Can you open multiple tabs in a mobile browser? No...).

In this context, the only things that make sense on the mobile internet are: jokes, music (yes, Music.mobi does make sense), Games, Maps, and Weather. News makes some sense too, but its good enough only for the headlines. Many people want to read a full story rather than just the headline. The mobile phone is only good for breaking news in this case. Movies don't make sense on a mobile - do you really wanna watch Pirates of the Caribbean on a 2" screen? Stocks don't make sense on a mobile - you wouldn't want to invest 100k in a stock without doing your proper research, would you? And how can you do your research on a 2" screen? Beats me..

And if you tell me that the mobile phones will improve in the future and incorporate much more content (like the iPhone???) - which I believe is pretty inevitable - then there would be no need for the .mobi extension, right? People could just access the full fledged .com.

All those who think that the crappy current mobile browsers are gonna remain the same in the next 10 years are really just trying to make themselves believe an absurdity. 10 years ago, mobiles were black and white and used to weigh a ton. Now look at them. Do you think in 10 years we won't see any improvement?

Focus, do you have KoolAid.mobi shirts in stock yet???:rofl:

i.e. someone just gets stuck with them and there is no "higher bidder" to sell them to later..unless they generate money and traffic on their own..which they DON'T.

sashas you are a mobi hater. You just say that because you want other people's mobi domains for cheap or because you missed the landrush.

bofa.mobi - enough said.

Roy, I don't *hate* mobi. I'm just skeptical. I don't condemn people who invest in it, but I do voice my opinion when I see someone without experience wasting 1.3 million dollars on such a new extension. I'm not running on blind hate here. You will agree that I have some valid points in my post. And if I'm a skeptic, its not because I missed the landrush - I came into domaining just 6 months ago so I missed pretty much all the landrushes - its because I see some severe flaws in the .mobi plan.

You will agree that as an instrument, the size of a mobile phone severely limits its functionality, particularly when it comes to large chunks of information. Its good for a 10 line joke, not good for a 2000 line article. Its good for catching the breaking news, not so good for typing in long posts like these on DNF.

And please, I don't say that because I want some cheap .mobi names. I have just one .mobi name (bloggo.mobi) and thats too was a compulsive reg, a non keyword name.

EXACTLY,

So no more comments on if JOKES.mobi is a good idea :)

Just kidding, I don't care... say what you want...
that's what makes this forum good :)

Opinions.

Anyways, the REASON I bought JOKES.mobi ..
It has a very practical mobile phone use...

NOT graphic intensive, it would be easy to develop,
and JOKES.com is owned by Comedy Central/MTV.

Anyways,

the statement made by Sashas, which I quoted, is the reason
JOKES.mobi is in my collection.

:)

Carry on :)

I'll admit XF, Jokes.mobi was a great buy. I receive at least half a dozen SMS jokes everyday, and Jokes.mobi makes sense. It wasn't overly inflated like the rest of the names either.

Look at the other top selling names: Movies.mobi, Photos.mobi. Do you really think there's a market for movies on a mobile? Remember what happened to those handheld DVD players?

Photos.mobi
probably good for sharing photos back and forth.

For me, I wanted to buy something that was MAINLY text,
no graphics, and had a practical application
"on the go"

Many people subscribe to daily jokes for their mobile phone,
so it seemed like a good fit.

I agree, I'm happy with the price I paid for it, and it
should be an easy development project.

you know XF, this is the difference between someone who actually knows the industry and buys a good, relevant keyword name (Jokes.mobi) at a good price, and someone who has very little idea about names and rides the hype to buy 1.3 million bucks worth of names.

EDITED!! :)

Yeah, JOKES typically isn't a decent paying keyword,
but that's not what to consider on .mobi.

It's the PRACTICAL phone application...

Other names, while GREAT keywords,
if you stop and think about it,
they don't really work "on the go"
or on a small screen etc.

Thanks for the good words, I
think JOKES.mobi was a good move, and
it's pretty much a perfect topic for mobile phones.

THE OTHER AWESOME NAME that sold,
in my mind:

HOROSCOPES.mobi

People that love horoscopes want to know
what the horoscope of the day is, RIGHT NOW!, and
it's an easy thing to get on a mobile phone.

Anyways,

I think there were a lot of great-use names
in the auction, some better than others.

:)

lol man...you're still .com obsessed

But yeah, that was a good name too...Horoscopes.mobi.

Some ultra premium names don't make much sense on a mobile phone really. Casino.mobi or Poker.mobi...you have to be really screwed up in the head to gamble on your mobile phone while on your way to the office, riding the subway.

Did anyone notice that the better, more relevant names (Jokes, Horoscopes) went to actual domainers with knowledge of the industry, not speculators with huge pockets?

You rock! You're now up there in the hall of fame with greats such as AngelX666 [the boy who thinks he's a woman]. :D
