You .mobi fanatics keep wanting to compare .mobi to .com. You should should be comparing .mobi to .eu. Both extensions were ruined by domainers. Big difference is the .mobi registry is milking this extension for millions by holding back premium keywords and auctioning them to foolish domainers.

I thought it was you guys comparing .mobi with .com.

Just because you bought iphones and it's not getting traffic (should've got some adult names, I've got generic typo adult .mobis making more) doesn't mean all names don't get traffic. There's plenty of people jerking off to a shaky 2 inch screen!

Fearless you have to be initiated before you can understand the real power of .mobi. Your in the dark my friend, come to the light. Have no fear, initiation is easy, just keep buying mobi's until you feel a little uneasy about what you've done, then come back and join our group...you will see the light :)
Totally agree, he should dump his generic names, 3- & 2-letter .com and invest in domains with real value
Is the confession thread still open ? :)

here's the way I see it. By the time the general public knows about .mobi (which will be a long time. The general public still doesn't know about .info), the mobile browsers would've already moved beyond the "mobile browsing" stage. The Opera browser is just a first step. Soon, there'll be more and better ones coming out. In the 3-5 years it'll take for the general public to be aware of .mobi, mobile browsing would've reached the point where you won't even need the .mobi - you could simply go to the .com site.

I am not saying that Opera will win the Mobile Phone Browser War, but this does signal that it is now game on. Firefox will bring out something similar in the next few months. I doubt whether Microsoft will develop anything slick enough to run on your average mobile any time, soon but who knows! Yes, you have got the point that these obviate the need for dot Mobi. What you don't seem to have got is that effectively we are just about at that point already. As far as being developed by large corporates, dot Mobi is still born. And for those that point to huge lists of registrations just how much impact does $15 worth of registration fee have. It is just an insurance policy for the most part. When they are bored with them, they will probably just renew for 100 years at Net Sol and forget!

They're working on one. http://labs.live.com/deepfish/

No mention of .mobi.
Naw, they were smart. That is why they have Microsoft Mobile 6...it is not a browser. That is why I said browser does not make the site.

It's the packaging.

Anyways, doing good.

Just woke up, and here are the latest numbers:

Doc, we just like bashing .mobi. Thats why the thread is so damn long. You quote these numbers but they're irrelevant. None of the mobi lovers can come up with any argument about the new wave of browsers. Sometimes this blind faith in .mobi disturbs me..

Trust me, you don't want me to go into this. They say I can write a book, my responses are too long, and they are right.

I am writing and illustrating a book but it's a children's book.

Regarding the irrelevancy of numbers I am posting?

Results 1 - 10 of about 319,000 for .mobi forum
Mobility.mobi #1
NP #3 3903 threads 13459 posts.
DNF #10 1121 threads 14895

So for someone(s) not liking mobi and mobi forums, DNF ranking number 10 out of 319,000.

Read the cliff notes:

It ain't the browser, it is the packaging.

It is less use of bandwidth.

It is quicker to load and search.

Quicker response time.

Question (and I know there will be several liars):

How many on these mobi threads have actually did a side-by-side comparison of an .com site to its mobi counterpart?

Thought so.

Next question...

Sometimes this blind faith in .mobi disturbs me..
Perhaps as equally as disturbing as someone who spends so much time telling someone else how much they don't like something?

I assure you, I have no blind faith...in anything I do.

Almost certainly wrong on all four counts. The latests technology only installs a kernel of a browser on the phone. Most of the processing intensive crunching is done at web site level. It even reconfigures the appearance of the site to simulate the dot Mobi format, and you can toggle between the two.

The bottom line is that running parallel sites and synchronising databases is a major problem for those involved in online commerce. The new browsers get around all that. They also obviate problems with Brand Dilution, and the additional cost of marketing an extra URL.

Come on, wake up and smell the coffee and stop dreaming your life away. This weeks sale was delusional. Those kind of keywords will always have some value but frankly the extension is just another Wannabee TLD.

Pssst! Over here.......

Forget about technology - forget about browsers - it doesn't matter - it's a domain extension. If people notice it, and use it, it will be successful. That will happen if it gets exposure; 500k users of bofa.mobi-like-exposure....

So there you go, no need to be disturbed; you can get back to your job. Or is this your job, a professional poster at DNF?

Can you tell me of any of the big corporations paying big money for .mobi names? Consider the fact that Sony, Universal, Nokia, Motorola, EA, etc. all stayed out of the auctions for the top names (Music, Movies, Photos, Games, Videos, etc.) just tells me that the big corporations are not ready to shell out big money for .mobi

Bank of American got Bofa.mobi for reg fee. It sure didn't pay 100k for it. Bank of American also owns Loans.com. But it didn't consider paying even 30k for Loans.mobi - that tells you something, doesn't it?

Consider the other top names:

Games.com and Music.com - owned by AOL
Games.mobi and Music.mobi - owned by Alvaro

Movies.com - owned by Disney
Movies.mobi - owned by Alvaro

Film.com - Real Network
Film.mobi - mTLD

Game.com - Hasbro
Game.mobi - mTLD

Buy.com - owned by Buy.com
Buy.mobi - some domainer

Mobile.com - ATT
Mobile.mobi - mTLD

Online.com - CNET
Online.mobi - mTLD

eeks...

I can go on and on. In my brief search, Not ONE of the top generic keyword .mobi names are owned by large corporations. I might've found ONE premium generic keyword .mobi owned by a large corporation, but that would've taken me a long long time.

What does it tell you? That the big corporations are NOT paying for .mobi names.

If AOL owns Music.com and thought Music.mobi was worth it, wouldn't it have bought the name right now than 2 years later when (according to the .mobi lovers) the name would be much more expensive? Don't tell me that they couldn't afford it...

Same goes for Games.com and Games.mobi, Loans.com and Loans.mobi

Mobi lovers, try and give me an answer for this. All the premium .mobi names are still held either by mTLD, or by domainers (and not any of the big domainers, mind you. I couldn't find any premium .mobi name owned by Name Media or Marchex etc.). So basically, .mobi is being inflated by domainers...

And don't tell me that domainers own premium .com names too. Yes they do, and they don't sell because they have huge asking prices, and they have huge asking prices because they earn 6 figures through parking itself - they don't need to sell.

This is called a 'sucker punch' guys...I still challenge you to name some premium .mobi names owned by big corporations...

Look Dude, this is no way to deal with these guys. Application of logic in discussion causes deep offence and revulsion in the Mobi Fraternity!

I love coffee, drinking Sumatra at the moment.

The dream is that one day you hope, you wish, you pray that all of this will go away. It won't.

This weeks sales are stunning, not delusional. There are several attempts to make the buyers and bidders as delusional. But it is there money, and obviously have plenty of it.

I am clearly not wrong on all four counts. I am still waiting for the answer of the side by side comparison.

I am sure it is much like the Helio Ocean I have. It will automatically format a .com site to fit the screen. Great in concept, poor in functionality. If I want to do online banking or check my account (which I do) I have a screen that very much on appearances appears to be mobile. But to get to the log in, I have to indicate HTML to log in. Then I get the entire site. Same with my alltel email. Same with this site.

Then you have to scroll like hell to get to the log in, the user panel, the password panel.

Go back and look at the video that you are so proud of. It is exactly what she is doing. I can demonstrate the exact same thing on the helio ocean. It is made to do that. It does not improve the functionality or performance of the site. It is actually more bothersome. It is actually more time consuming.

As for branding, Poker brought up all that is needed is a link on the home page indicating MOBILE. I can't argue with that. But it still needs to redirect to another URL. It doesn't matter what you want to call it and everyone has their own creative way of indicating mobile and no end to the prefixes, suffixes, and sub-domains.

Ask BofA how much money they spent on the BofA.mobi campaign. Then ask them was it worth getting more than 500,000 subscribers signed up. Better yet, I will try to set up a meeting with someone in their PR and Marketing department and provide a transcript of that interview. But the biggest problem is if you are not convinced now you will not be convinced then. So I may do it purely for self-gratification.

So get out your internet enabled cell phone and do the comparison. Because I can tell you that your statement:

It even reconfigures the appearance of the site to simulate the dot Mobi format, and you can toggle between the two.

...is a huge waste of time and effort. Simply stating you can toggle between the two makes one less desirable. I already have to do that on sites that I use regularly and it is a pain in the ass.

I'll be here all night so we can keep this nonsense going.

Doc, Doc, Doc...

My challenge is still open. Give me a solid, logical response as to why any of the major corporations who own premium .coms don't own the equivalent .mobis?

Btw, here are some more:

Books.com and Book.com - Barnes And Noble
Books.com and Books.mobi - Domainers

news.com - CNET
news.mobi - domainer

mortgage.com - CITI
Mortgage.mobi - mTLD

VideoGames.com - GameSpot
VideoGames.mobi - mTLD

Play.com - Play Limited
Play.mobi - mTLD

Gifts.com - Giftco, Inc.

Call.com - Communicate Inc
Call.mobi - some domainer

Start.com - Microsoft
Start.mobi - mTLD

Download.com - CNET
Download.mobi - mTLD

Poker.com - Casper Enterprises
Poker.mobi - some domainer

Motorcycles.com - Honda
Motorcycles.mobi - Domainer

Rent.com - eBay
Rent.mobi - domainer

Shop.com - Shop Inc.
Shop.mobi -mTLD

And just so that all of you mobi lovers don't feel too bad, I'll say that Style.mobi is owned by E! Entertainment group...but then, they don't own the equivalent .com, so that shouldn't really count...

Not seeing any logic whatsoever.

What I am seeing is opinions expressed on this very forum going all the way back to 2004, pre mobi launch, pre joining this or any other forum. Same opinions expressed then are being expressed right here, right now.

The opera 4 browser is so unimpressive as browsers out there are already doing this. YIPPEE! Opera is going to join Safari and others.

But lets keep this going and see if we can get DNF up to number 9.
